Copenhagen is one of my favorite European cities and I say that with my whole heart. It is beautiful in an effortless way and welcoming in a way that feels like a warm hug. I am often reminded of why so many travelers fall in love with it. The city blends deep history, modern creativity and that famous Danish sense of comfort known as hygge. It is also one of the happiest places in the world which you can feel from the moment you arrive.

Whether you are visiting for culture, cuisine or simple joy, Copenhagen is a destination that invites you to slow down and savor life. Here is an introduction to this amazing city along with some of my favorite experiences, places to stay and restaurants to enjoy.

Rooted in History. Shaped by Imagination

Copenhagen began as a small fishing village more than a thousand years ago. Over the centuries it grew into a vibrant port city shaped by Vikings, royalty and global trade. Today you can still wander medieval streets near Strøget, visit grand palaces like Amalienborg and stroll along Nyhavn where rows of colorful townhouses reflect in the harbor. History is everywhere but it never overwhelms. Instead it creates a beautiful backdrop for daily life.

The city has kept its heritage alive while also embracing modern design, green living and a sense of playfulness. Copenhagen’s skyline blends spires with sleek architecture. Its neighborhoods feel both old world and fresh at the same time. That balance is one of the city’s greatest charms.

Where I Stayed: The Latin Quarter

I stayed at the 1 Hotel Copenhagen in the Latin Quarter and absolutely loved it. This stylish, eco centered hotel sits in the Latin Quarter which is one of my favorite parts of the city. The neighborhood is full of personality with cafés, small boutiques, leafy squares and cobblestone streets that make evening strolls feel magical.

The hotel’s calming spaces, natural materials and thoughtful details made it feel like a retreat right in the middle of Copenhagen. It was a perfect base for exploring and a place that matched the gentle warmth of the city itself.

Modern Copenhagen: Culture, Creativity and Easy Living

What makes Copenhagen so special today is its modern culture. The city is designed for people. Biking is the preferred way to get around and locals make it look effortless. Outdoor spaces are meant for gathering. Waterfront areas encourage swimming, hanging out and soaking up fresh air. Danish design shows up everywhere from cozy cafés to public buildings. Everything feels intentional but never forced.

One of the most unique stops to add to any itinerary is the Happiness Museum. It explores the science and philosophy of happiness in a way that is fun and thoughtful. Denmark is often ranked one of the happiest countries in the world and this small museum helps explain why. It looks at everything from community values to daily rituals that make life feel meaningful.

Another experience I highly recommend is a Hey Captain boat tour. These small group canal cruises are relaxed, personal and filled with local insight. Rather than a scripted tour, it feels more like exploring the city with a friendly Copenhagen host. You glide past hidden corners, waterfront neighborhoods and iconic landmarks with a cozy atmosphere that matches the city’s spirit.

Understanding Hygge

Hygge is one of those concepts that sounds simple but feels deeper when you experience it. It is the sense of comfort and contentment that comes from slowing down and enjoying small pleasures. Think soft lighting, warm pastries, shared meals, meaningful conversations and the gentle joy of being fully present.

Copenhagen is built on hygge. You feel it in candlelit restaurants, in the glow of bakeries early in the morning and in the way locals gather with friends at all times of the year. Even cold weather is treated as an opportunity to get cozy. Hygge helps explain why this city feels instantly welcoming and why visitors so often describe it as soothing, peaceful and grounding.

Copenhagen’s Food Scene

Copenhagen is one of Europe’s great food cities. It has world renowned fine dining and simple local favorites that feel just as special. Some of my favorite places to eat include:

Olives
A warm and inviting spot with dishes that feel homemade in the best way. It is cozy, flavorful and perfect for a relaxed dinner.

Restaurant Anton
A small and charming restaurant that serves beautiful plates with Scandinavian inspiration. It felt personal and delicious from start to finish.

Aamanns
Famous for its modern take on smørrebrød. If you have never tried these open faced Danish sandwiches loaded with fresh ingredients, this is the place.

Kødbyens Fiskebar
Located in the trendy Meatpacking District, this seafood restaurant is lively, fresh and full of energy. Think oysters, tartare, seasonal fish and a very fun atmosphere.

You should also plan a visit to Torvehallerne which is Copenhagen’s beloved food market. It is filled with stalls offering pastries, produce, cheeses, chocolates, spices and small bites from all over the world. It is a great place to graze your way through lunch or pick up treats to enjoy by the water.

Why Copenhagen Is Known for Happiness

Copenhagen reflects the values that make Denmark one of the world’s happiest countries. Life here feels balanced. People take time to enjoy daily moments. Work does not overshadow well being. The city is designed to support community, creativity and ease. Simple rituals like meeting friends for coffee or riding a bike to work become anchors of joy.

Visitors feel that energy too. There is a softness to the city that makes you breathe a little easier. Copenhagen invites you to slow down which is something so many of us crave.

For me, it truly feels like a hug. A warm, gentle, welcoming hug that makes me want to return again and again.

We don’t want to alarm anyone, but there are 14 more weekends before Thanksgiving and 18 more weekends before the Christmas holiday!  If you were planning on traveling during the holidays, or sneaking in an early December vacation before Christmas,  now is your time to book.   With a little flexibility there is still availability and still deals to be found.   Here are our tips for booking holiday travel :

• Seek Expert Assistance: Holiday travel presents its own set of challenges and we can’t stress enough the value of using a professional travel advisor.  You’ll be able to leverage our knowledge, experience and contacts to your advantage while booking your holiday travel.  

• Book Early: Holiday travel is in high demand, and prices increase as the dates approach.  Booking flights and accommodations early ensures better availability and potentially lower prices.  While it’s not too late to book, you definitely want to do it now. 

• Be Flexible with Dates: If possible, avoid peak travel days like the day before Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve. Traveling a few days before,  after or even on the major holiday dates can save you money.

• Consider Alternate Airports: We get it, we would much rather fly out of Dulles versus one of the other DC Metro airports, but now is the time to check your nearby airport options to see if it’s worth the drive.  Traveling from smaller or nearby airports can sometimes offer better deals. 

• Be Flexible with Destinations: Popular holiday destinations book up fast.  Now is the time to be open to destinations that may not have been on your list to begin with.  This also goes for accommodations as well.

• Pack Your Patience: Busy airports and roads are inevitable during the holidays. Gracie’s View: Beaches Turks and Caicos Family Vacation Review

Hey there! My name is Gracie!   

I want to share with you all my view about Beaches Turks and Caicos and my favorite parts of being at Beaches Turks, first off let’s start with the rooms.  My family stayed in the Italian village in a butler suite!  As a family of four it was very spacious with 2 bedrooms, a living room, a butler pantry, two bathrooms and a HUGE balcony with a great view of the ocean.  By the way, the ocean is the bright blue!  If you are traveling with ten of your favorite friends or family members, well guess what?!?   The luxurious Italian Oceanview Two Bedroom butler suite can even fit you! 

Oh and the butlers! Our butlers were so nice!  They would always leave fun surprises like snacks, drinks, and cute little towel shapes. The first day when we arrived there were snacks waiting for us, they decorated our room and there was even little swan made from towels.   Our butlers always had treats and surprises waiting for us.  The best thing though was the day they made our tie dye shirts for us because we were going to miss the time for tie dye while we were doing another activity.  The butlers are very good at their job and created a wonderful experience for us. 

Another favorite part of this vacation was the restaurant Barefoot By The Sea. It was one of my favorites because you can enjoy your food, have a view and enjoy literally being barefoot by the sea!

Also, the activities are amazing! One of my favorites is the Pirate’s Island water park where I did the Flowrider (a surfing simulator).  Another was floating around the lazy river, a special little tradition my mom and I share.  

The pool at the Italian village is the biggest pool and, I would say the one with the most entertainment.  It has a swim-up pool bar with great mocktails.  There are even evenings where you can do a “pool movie night” and watch a movie from the pool, which I did with my dad.

On our last night of vacation we got to have a private bonfire on the beach to celebrate my mom’s birthday and a great family vacation. 

In all, being at Beaches Turks and Caicos was a treasured moment of my life and I am happy to share my experience with you all.   Thanks for reading!

Our small group luxury sailing, Croatia by Yacht will offer an incredible, once in a lifetime Mediterranean experience!     On this unforgettable journey between Split and Dubrovnik we will view the stunning landscapes, charming coastal towns and pristine islands that decorate the Dalmatian Coast.    

Our voyage begins in Split where we will explore the impressive Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and take in the sights and sounds of the iconic Riva Promenade.   From Split we will head south, sailing on the azure waters past a myriad of enchanting islands.
